Research indicates that children experiencing domestic abuse are more likely than other children to show a number of effects

Trauma Symptoms:

Children can often display trauma-related symptoms.

Behavioural Changes:

Children can also develop behavioural difficulties.

Protective Intervention:

Children are more likely to intervene on behalf of the non-abusive parent.

Traumatic Bonding:

Children can develop a traumatic bond with the perpetrator.

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 defines domestic abuse as any of the following abusive behaviours between individuals aged 16 or over who are personally connected:

    1.    Physical or sexual abuse

    2.    Violent or threatening behaviour

    3.    Controlling or coercive behaviour

    4.    Economic abuse

    5.    Psychological, emotional or other abuse

Under the Act, children are also recognised as victims in their own right, including when they see, hear, or experience the effects of this abuse.
